Summer Hair Care

Now that summer is finally here you need to take care of your freshly colored and coiffed hair. Here are some things to keep in mind as you enjoy the warmth, sunshine, swimming and workout routines.

Wash sparingly

Colored hair looks its best if washed only 2-3 times per week. This helps maintain the color and prevents it from drying out. To extend your time between washes use a dry shampoo. We love Kevin Murphy’s FRESH.HAIR.

What do you do after a workout if you shouldn’t wash your hair each time? Scrub your scalp under the water to rinse away sweat and product.

Remember (this is important!), the type of water and shampoo or conditioner you use will greatly impact your hair color! Soft water will make hair limp and dull. Hard water with a high mineral content will open the cuticle and leach out your color and damage hair. Make sure you are using a salon shampoo and conditioner. Don’t be fooled by the drugstore brands that say “color safe”…they’re not. The pH and formulation of quality salon products are designed to seal and smooth the cuticle and to lock in your color and add shine.

avoid chlorine

Just in case you haven’t heard this from Rivajeta; “Don’t go swimming in a chlorine pool with colored hair!” If you are blonde, you will turn green. If you are some other color, you can kiss it goodbye, and then you will be coming to us for a toner to fix this. Instead, put your hair up, slather it with good conditioner so it doesn’t absorb any water and enjoy a gentle soak.

protect & hydrate

Yes, the sun also will fade color, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the sunshine. Cover hair with a hat and use products that protect from heat, such as Kevin Murphy’s HEATED.DEFENSE.

If you spray tan make sure you cover your hair with a shower cap or else your hair WILL turn orange. Yikes!
